A Curse for True Love Review
Jacks’s and Evangeline’s relationship stole the show in this final book. It was the main driving force of the plot. This time, it was Evangeline’s turn to do the saving and protecting, no matter what Jacks tries to do to stop her.
To me, the first half of the book was a bit slow, focusing on Evangeline’s issue from the end of The Ballad of Never After. However, the second half of the book really picked up pace. By the time the end was near the plot had me going “omg” and “aw hell no” about a million times. I think some of the plot twists weren’t as twisty as the past books, but that certainly did not take away from the quality of the plot. I thought the concept was very clever, yet some ideas were a bit poorly executed. This resulted in some questions from readers after they finished the book. In my opinion, the book was just so entertaining, and Evangeline and Jacks’s relationship made up for some of the minor plot holes.
As always, there is Evangeline and Jacks, but there’s a character who has a much larger role in this finale (see what I did there), than the other two books, and that character is Apollo. Nevertheless, let me start off with Evangeline and Jacks.
Because of the ending of the last book (which I won’t say for fear of spoiling anybody who hasn’t read it yet), Evangeline is in quite the predicament. It was interesting to watch her try to put the pieces of her life together, and see how she reacts to certain events. Regardless, I just think too much time was spent on her “putting together the pieces.”
Now, Jacks. One thing that did disappoint me a little bit was the fact that I felt like I didn’t see much of Jacks. I think it’s similar to what happened with Scarlett in Finale. Both characters were so pivotal to the plot, yet we didn’t see much of them. Although, the scenes we did get with Jacks were different. A Curse For True Love really sheds more light on Jacks’s character. It dives into how he dealt with all the heartbreak that may have come with him being a Fate.
A Curse For True Love focused heavily on the relationship between Jacks and Evangeline. What I really liked in this final book is that it gave Evangeline a chance to save Jacks. It was so enjoyable to watch their relationship grow throughout the series. I think Garber did an excellent job at writing it in this final book.
Now, for the secondary characters. I would’ve liked to see more of the secondary characters, especially Chaos and Lala who have been there for Evangeline and Jacks since the beginning. They only made brief appearances, which I was a bit disappointed about. I think it would’ve been beneficial for other important characters from other books to make an appearance, like Luc and Marisol, to tie things up.
Finally, I feel that more could’ve been done with a certain family that made a new appearance. It just felt like they didn’t really make a striking impact on me when I was reading.
Last but not least, Apollo. I think it’s understandable when I say that I do not like him in the least bit. Regardless, I thought it was interesting to see some of the story from his perspective, especially since he’s been a necessary character to Evangeline’s story from the beginning.
To tie it all together is Garber’s writing. I’ve always enjoyed her writing, and A Curse for True Love is no exception. Her writing brought the characters that I love to life, and I am forever grateful for that.
Overall, I can’t believe I’m done with this trilogy. I think A Curse for True Love was a perfect way to end the series.
TLDR: Perfect ending to a perfect trilogy!
